Three Important Considerations for HVAC Replacement Filter Selection

by Olivia Morris

One of the most important maintenance tasks for HVAC systems is the periodic replacement of the air filter. This is crucial in eliminating general contaminants and improving the indoor air quality. I simple terms, there are numerous pollutants which are present in air. When these are inhaled, they will cause respiratory problems, particularly in people with allergies. Common contaminants include pet fur, pollen and dust. The filters will also improve the efficiency and performance of the appliance and prolong the HVAC lifespan. In addition, there will be fewer malfunctions in the system, limiting potential repair costs. On the other hand, these benefits will depend on the installation of the right filter. Here are critical factors to help you identify the most suitable air filtration product for your HVAC system.

Filter Sizing

You should check the right filter sizing for your air conditioning and heating system before shopping. This aspect will determine its ability to fit into the equipment and perform its function efficiently. In general, you can check your old filter or the owner's manual for the description of an ideal filter. This should provide you with details on the width and height of the component. The thickness of residential HVAC is typically standard, but you should check if your appliance requires a special type. In most cases, you will find a stock air filter which matches your requirements. However, if you do not find one, consider a cut-to-size alternative.

Material Selection

There are different materials used to manufacture good quality air filters for residential applications. The most basic filters are fabricated using fibreglass and are designed with a flat panel surface. They are favoured because they are inexpensive compared to alternatives. However, their simple construction means that they are only suited for eliminating relatively large pollutants. If you want efficient fibreglass filters, you should look for products with randomly arranged fibres as opposed to flat ones. For example, HEPA filters are made in this style and can capture tiny particulate pollutants. Polyester filters are made using a unique pleated design. This allows the components to trap most common contaminants and significantly improve your indoor air.

Filter Efficiency Rating

Finally, you should check the efficiency rating of your preferred air filter before making your decision. This is an important factor in determining the ability of the replacement filter to improve your indoor air. Typically, the HVAC industry uses MERV rating as the measurement scale for the filters. Compare the indicated ratings with the common pollutants in your home.

About Me

Replacing Sensors on Your HVAC System

Welcome to my blog which covers a wide range of HVAC topics. I'm Josh and I live in Perth, Australia. I never really used to think about the HVAC system in my home. I believed that when it was hot the HVAC system would cool me down and when it was cold it would warm my house up. However, all that changed one day when the HVAC system went crazy. It began to blow hot air into my house on the warmest day of the year. The contractor I called out said that one of the sensors had broken. He explained how I could better maintain my HVAC system so I decided to start this blog.
